Addressing the effects of perceptual-motor dysfunction

This practical half-day will describe the various components of motor and perceptual development and how they impact on a child’s ability to learn.

This practical half-day will describe the various components of motor and perceptual development and how they impact on a child’s ability to learn. It will demonstrate how dysfunction in this area will influence social interaction, learning and behaviour. It will particularly focus on children with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, ASD, and Developmental Coordination Disorder.

The session will use practical examples to aid understanding, and will provide recommendations for classroom practice.

 

 

 

 

Learning outcomes:

  • To explain auditory and visual perception and its importance to cognition.
  • To provide an overview of assessments used to identify areas of perceptual dysfunction
  • To critique the various therapeutic approaches used to address perceptual dysfunction including process orientated, task-centred, and adaptive / compensatory.
  • To recommend activities to improve and / or compensate for perceptual-motor dysfunction.

Training led by: Lois M Addy MA (Ed) BSc (Hons) Psych. Dip COT SROT, SI-UK

Lois Addy is an independent SEND advisor and lecturer, teaching both nationally and internationally.  She has qualifications in occupational  therapy, psychology and education, and has over 37 years’  experience in working with children with SEN; especially those with developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia).

Lois is the author of a number of books including ‘Get Physical: an Inclusive Therapeutic/Educational Motor Skills Programme’, ‘How to Understand and Support Children with Dyspraxia’ and ‘How to Increase the Potential of Students with DCD’(Dyspraxia) in Secondary School’.
